Coordinated School Health (CSH) is a systemic approach of advancing student academic performance by promoting, practicing and coordinating school health education and services for the benefit and well-being of students in establishing healthy behaviors designed to last their lifetime. All Texas school districts are required by law to implement a coordinated school health program in grades K-8.

Review this section in Title 2, Chapter 38, Section 38.013 of the Texas Education Code.

Coordinated School Health commonly consists of eight components that encompass all aspects of the school environment. The components interact to function as a unified system and can become a theme for the entire school. In 2016 two more components were added: family engagement and community involvement. The reason was to strengthen a unified and collaborative approach designed to improve learning and health in our nation’s schools.

These components incorporate:

  • Development of cognitive skills
  • Development of policies that support a positive psycho-social and hazard-free environment
  • Families and communities in promoting the well-being of youth
  • Opportunities for staff members to foster their own well-being

The Eight(+2) Components of Coordinated School Health
The agency is required by law to make available to each school district one or more coordinated health programs. Each program is designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes in elementary school, middle school, and junior high school students. Each program must coordinate health education, including oral health education, physical education and physical activity, nutrition services, and parental involvement.

TEA Approved CSH Programs
The education, public health, and school health sectors have each called for greater alignment that includes, integration and collaboration between education leaders and health sectors to improve each child’s cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. Public health and education serve the same children, often in the same settings. The Whole School Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model focuses on the child to align the common goals of both sectors to put into action a whole child approach to education

School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group appointed by the school district to serve at the district level.  Members of the SHAC come from different areas of the community and from within the school district.  The majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the district.  Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district.  SHACs are required to meet at least four times each year.
